Global Market Day (GMD) has been a part of our community ministry programme from 2007 and is rapidly expanding across Queensland as other churches take up the vision. Global Market Day is the host of an event that raises the profile of the poor in the name of Jesus. GMD is run as an expression of our experience of God's love and heart for the oppressed and our commitment to serve others.
GMD is about creating an opportunity for the public to purchase goods and support projects that empower developing communities in Australia and overseas. GMD seeks to raise awareness about how we can use our money and voices to ensure that manufacturers, retailers and governments work together for a more just world. Each stallholder, as far as we are able to ascertain, purchases products ethically from or supports a poor community in Australia or overseas (whether that be fund-raising, advocacy or aid development). Global Market Day charges each stallholder a fee. This amount is not used for running costs (which is what many other markets do), rather GMD chooses to raise its funds in other ways (food stalls at GMD or other festivals where it promotes the upcoming events and sells product) so that it can give the stallholder fees away. It is part of the integrity of GMD that no money is retained by the church for its own benefit. Previously, we have donated to a community building program in Ethiopia, the Dhiyaan Indigenous Leadership Programme, a World Vision/AusAid Thai Trafficking Project, The Victorian Bush Fire Appeal and Heal Africa.
Each year we host a market in March and October with approximately 30-40 fair trade and sustainable stallholders and non-governmental organisations, including World Vision Australia, Compassion Australia, TEAR, Micah Challenge and Oxfam.
Global Market Day is a member of the Queensland Fair Trade Collective and we work closely with the collective and non-governmental organisations to provide ethical shopping opportunities for our local and extended community.
